To create an image using only the gradient tool
in Photoshop. In my case I decided to create a
Ganesh. |

Tip:
You can use the lighting values to create
seemingly boolean unions by putting circular selection
of concentric gradient on various layers.

Methodology:
Create circular selections in various layers.
Fill with gradient and then set to 'lighten' against
a black background. Now group the layers so that
they seem to merge with the various shapes. You
can create odd shapes by booleaning selections.
Grouping the layers will help you achieve the
shape you want.

Finishing
off:
After the image you desire is arrived upon, merege
the layers so that you get a flat image. On the
image apply a gradient map and you get the desired
effect. You could also composite the image against
a background as I've done here.
